The town in brief

What is Fujiyoshida known for?

Fujiyoshida is known for Mt Fuji views, for Yoshida no udon, its most famous specialty1, and as the historical starting point for pilgrims climbing Mount Fuji2. Artisans here have also made high-quality textiles for several centuries2.

650–850 m above sea level2

  • Setting: a city at the northern foot of Mount Fuji3, built on old lava flows2.
  • Lakes: it sits between Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka4, in the Fuji Five Lakes area.
  • Height: 650 to 850 metres2 above sea level, so pack warm layers outside summer.
  • Rail hub: Fujisan Station, where trains reverse between Ōtsuki and Kawaguchiko5.

Chureito Pagoda and Arakurayama Sengen Park

Arakurayama Sengen Park is where you get the classic shot: Chureito Pagoda in front, Mt Fuji behind and the town of Fujiyoshida below8. Fujiyoshida’s official guide calls it one of Japan’s most spectacular viewpoints of Mount Fuji8.

Before you go:

  • The climb: the observation deck is 398 steps8 up.
  • Timing: go early, as Mt Fuji is best seen in the morning9, before haze and cloud build up.
  • A second angle: Wikivoyage says the nearby Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine has a platform with views of the pagoda and Mount Fuji10.
  • Driving: Parking Lot No. 1 has 88 spaces8; the fee is in the price table below.

For the full visit, see the Chureito Pagoda guide. Short on time from Tokyo? This guided day tour stops at the pagoda.

How do you get to Honcho Street in Fujiyoshida?

Take the Fujikyu Railway to Shimoyoshida Station, then walk 7 minutes8 to the tourist information centre on Honcho Street. The centre stands right in front of the Honmachi 2-chome traffic light8, the popular Mt Fuji view spot.

  • City loop bus: the centre is a 1-minute walk8 from the Akemi-iriguchi stop.
  • Car: about 12 minutes8 from Kawaguchiko Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, with a municipal car park and bicycle parking nearby7.

Honcho Street (Honmachi) runs through the heart of Fujiyoshida towards Mount Fuji8, which is why it’s also called Fujimichi7. The travel guide GOOD LUCK TRIP sums it up as Mt Fuji rising beyond retro shop signs and utility wires7, and the shot is frequently posted on Instagram8.

Fuji-Q Highland

Fuji-Q Highland is an amusement park in Fujiyoshida12 with attractions suitable for adults and children2. Entry is free, but rides need tickets or a pass: an adult One Day Pass (ages 18 to 64) costs ¥6,000–7,90013 (about US$38–50) (checked October 2026), depending on the date.

  • Eejanaika: the park bills it as a 4th Dimension Hypercoaster with the highest total number of revolutions in the world15.
  • Thomas Land: a Thomas the Tank Engine area with 12 attractions plus restaurants, cafés and shops, designed for families with small children, pregnant visitors and three generations16.
  • Getting in: the nearest station is Fuji-Q Highland Station on the Fujikyu Line, and highway buses stop at a terminal in the car park of the Highland Resort Hotel & Spa next to the park17.

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja and Kanadorii

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja is a historic shrine and one of the component assets of the Mt. Fuji World Heritage site18. The Yoshida Ascending Route starts at the shrine19, at the northern foot of the mountain.

Kanadorii, a short walk from Fujisan Station, is known as the First Torii Gate8 because it’s the first gate on the Yoshida Trail to the summit. It stands in the middle of the road8, so watch for traffic when you stop for a photo.

The shrine and Suwa Shrine hold the Yoshida Fire Festival every year on 26 and 27 August20, closing the Mt Fuji climbing season:

  • 26 August: more than 70 great torches up to 3 metres tall20 are lit at dusk, with more torches stacked in front of each house.
  • 27 August, evening20: parishioners and spectators carry pampas-grass offerings (susuki no tamagushi) around the shrine grounds with the portable shrine.

Fujisan Museum and Michi-no-Eki Fujiyoshida

The Fujisan Museum and the Michi-no-Eki Fujiyoshida roadside station both use the Fujisan Museum Park bus stop, reached by bus from Fujisan Station.

The Fujisan Museum is the place to learn about all sorts of things related to Mount Fuji8, handy when the real one hides in cloud. japan-guide.com says the adult ticket also covers the Former Togawa Residence21. The museum park has a café in a renovated Oshi (pilgrimage guide) residence1, and parking is free for 90 cars8.

Michi-no-Eki Fujiyoshida is a popular roadside station with a direct view of Mount Fuji8:

  • Spring water: draw as much Mt Fuji spring water as you like at the free8 water point.
  • Late lunch: the snack corner serves Yoshida udon from 10:00 to 16:008, handy if you miss the lunch-only udon shops.
  • Step-free: the Yamanashi tourism site lists a wheelchair ramp and step-free access, plus accessible toilets, wheelchair parking and wheelchairs to borrow, as of 9 December 202522.
