Built from public sources
Shinjuku to Chureito: about 1 h 40 min1
A plan built from public sources: opening hours from Google Maps and driving times from OpenRouteService routes (no traffic). Not a trip report.
Map of this plan: the stops in visit order, numbered as in the day-by-day plan. Tokyo (Shinjuku Station) is off the map, in the direction of the arrow.
Drawn to scale from the stops' map locations. Dashed lines join two stops in a straight line, not along the road.
Pagoda first, lake after
The plan starts on the Fujiyoshida side at Chureito Pagoda, then crosses to Lake Kawaguchi, where the rest of the stops sit a short drive apart. Until the drive home, no leg takes longer than about 7 min by car, 5 km1.
Ropeway: 3 minutes to the top3
In the Maple Corridor (Momiji Tunnel) you can see Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi through the maples6. Oishi Park, on the north shore, has superb views of Mt Fuji7; read up on Oishi Park in autumn and the rest of the year before you go.
The drive back to Shinjuku from Oishi Park is about 1 h 40 min by car, 130 km1. Budget extra for traffic on the way home.
Before you set off
Every stop in this plan opens daily, so any day of the week works:
The Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center inside Oishi Park keeps shorter hours from November to March8.
Bus and train
Yes. A highway bus or the Fuji Excursion train takes you from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station, and the Red Line sightseeing bus covers the ropeway and the north shore.
Highway bus: about 1 h 45 min16
Lake Kawaguchiko is the main point of entry to the Fuji Five Lakes region11, so the station is where every public-transport version of this day begins.
| Route | Time | Leaves from | Note | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highway bus | about 1 h 45 min | Busta Shinjuku 4F | Cheaper when booked online | Fujikyu Bus (operator) |
| Fuji Excursion train | 1 h 53 min at fastest | Shinjuku | 4 round trips a day | Fujikyu Railway (operator) |
| Car | about 1 h 40 min, 100 km to Chureito Pagoda | Shinjuku Station | Route time with no traffic | OpenRouteService (route data © OpenStreetMap contributors) |
Fujikyu Bus (operator); Fujikyu Railway (operator); OpenRouteService (route data © OpenStreetMap contributors)
The highway bus is run by Fujikyu Bus, Fuji Express and Keio Bus, and Highway Bus.com lists 49 buses a day12 at Kawaguchiko Station, counting both directions. Keio’s Highway Bus.com site warns that times may change from 1 November 202612.
The slower rail route is the JR Chuo line to Otsuki, then the Fujikyu line9. For every route and terminal in detail, see getting there from Tokyo.
Highway buses leave Busta Shinjuku 4F, about 2 minutes from JR Shinjuku Station's New South Gate. Or take the Fuji Excursion train.
Chureito Pagoda is about 25 minutes on foot from Shimoyoshida Station on the Fujikyu Railway Line.
From Kawaguchiko Station, the Red Line takes about 15 minutes to the ropeway, at the 'Yuransen' stop.
The retro bus takes about 30 minutes from Kawaguchiko Station to Oishi Park; the Red Line ends at the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center.
Since 17 July 2026 the Oishi Park Line boat has run as a shuttle between Funatsu pier and Oishi Park.
Take the bus or train back from Kawaguchiko Station. Bus arrivals can be delayed by accidents, traffic jams and extreme weather.
The sightseeing bus lines all leave Kawaguchiko Station, and this plan only needs the Red Line:

Plan B by the lake
The town tourism site pitches Fujikawaguchiko as a place where you can experience nature and culture even on rainy days22. These swaps sit near the plan’s route or are easy add-ons:
To go up the mountain itself rather than look at it, see the Mt Fuji Subaru Line station visitor guide.
Weighing Hakone instead? Its tourism association calls Hakone the closest tourist destination to central Tokyo29, and Odakyu puts the Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto at about 1h 25min30. Here’s how Hakone compares with Kawaguchiko.
If a single day feels rushed, there’s an overnight version of this trip, and more Lake Kawaguchiko itinerary ideas on the hub.
Let someone else drive
A coach tour from Tokyo takes the driving and the bookings off your hands. Klook’s photography tour covers Chureito Pagoda, Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai, and its Mount Fuji day trip adds a Kawaguchiko Tenjozan Park ropeway ticket.
