What’s on the plaza

Sightseeing is free5

Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station is where the toll road ends: restaurants, souvenir shops and a shrine, with views down over the lakes. Looking around costs nothing: sightseeing outside the Yoshida Trail gate is free5.

In good weather, the road operator says the Fuji Five Lakes shine below, with the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake and the Chichibu mountains beyond6.

What to look for once you’re off the bus:

  • Komitake Shrine: tucked behind the restaurants and souvenir shops7, on the peak of Mt. Komitake, an ancient mountain almost swallowed by Mt. Fuji7. Legend says tengu gave the shrine a huge axe7, and you’re welcome to try lifting it.
  • Gogoen Rest House: opens 8:30–17:30, or 6:00–20:00 in the climbing season, and is closed January to March8.
  • Melon bread: the rest house sells Mt. Fuji-shaped melon bread8, which is about as on-theme as a snack gets.

The Fuji Subaru Line is open all year round, with no fixed seasonal closure, but its gates close outside operating hours11, and those hours change through the year. From Tokyo, it’s around 1 hour 30 minutes12 by car to Kawaguchiko I.C. on the Chuo Expressway.

At the top, Fujiyoshida’s tourism guide lists free parking for 330 cars and 4013 buses.

Road status

Is the road open today?

Usually, yes: the Fuji Subaru Line has no closure period set by date11, but weather can shut it. The road may be closed depending on the weather and road-surface conditions14. In winter, the section you can drive changes from day to day11 because of snow and ice.

On 19 October 2026, the operator’s status page showed the whole route open from 3:0016. After the last winter, Yamanashi Prefecture expected the full road to open from 9 AM on 18 April 202617.

Fuji Subaru Line through the year
  • Road usually open in full May to November
  • Winter, open section varies December to April

What a partly open road means for the bus:

  • If the road is closed or open only as far as the 1st Station, the bus doesn’t run3.
  • If it’s open only to the 4th Station, the bus turns back there3.
  • After the full opening, traffic restrictions may still apply depending on the weather17, so check the road status on the day.

How cold does it get up there?

No source here gives a temperature for the station itself, but Fujiyoshida’s official guide reminds you that, even though you can drive there, it’s above 2,300 m13. Lake Kawaguchi sits at about 800 metres18, and even down there winters are cold.

−5.7 °C19
August
28.1 °C19
18.5 °C19
December
8.5 °C19
−2.9 °C19

Higher up, the official climbing site says that even in summer the top of Mt Fuji can drop to near 0 °C20 before sunrise. Bring a warm layer whatever the month, and see Kawaguchiko temperatures by month for the rest of the year.

Easy trails

Walks without climbing

Ochudo Trail about 70 minutes8

You don’t need to head for the summit to get a walk in: short routes start at or near the station. On a clear day you can see as far as the Minami (Southern) Alps21 from these trails.

  • Ochudo Trail (O-chūdō): about 70 minutes8 with good views of Mt Fuji, and no hiking fee5. It’s no longer a complete circuit around Mt. Fuji21.
  • Okuniwa: starts from the Oniwa bus stop, one stop before the 5th Station terminus21. From the car park to the viewing deck and back takes about 45 minutes21.
  • Osawa Collapse: the hike west takes several hours and isn’t recommended for casual visitors21.

For climbers

Climbing the Yoshida Trail

The Yoshida Trail is open to climbers in season only: 1 July to 10 September 202622. The start may be delayed by weather or lingering snow22.

Closed 14:00 to 3:00 the next day, except for mountain-lodge guests22

Rest about 1–2 hours23 near the station before setting off. The official site says altitude sickness is one of the most common reasons climbers abandon the climb23. Watch for headache, dizziness and lightheadedness23.

Who it suits

The station is a bus ride from town, but the altitude matters, especially for children.

  • Children: the official climbing site warns that children are at greater risk of altitude sickness than adults23.
  • Wheelchair users: the Yamanashi tourism site lists first aid, automatic doors at the main entrance, wheelchair loans and an AED at the Gogoen Rest House, in information dated 9 April 202425.
