The spring ponds of Oshino Village

The ponds are a cluster of eight clear spring-fed ponds5 in Oshino Village, between Lake Yamanakako (Lake Yamanaka) and Lake Kawaguchi, two of the Fuji Five Lakes6. Japan’s national tourism site describes them as eight ponds, each with its own story7.

Natural Monument of Japan8

The site is part of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site and a Natural Monument of Japan8. Mount Fuji joined the World Heritage List on 22 June 20139. At 3,776.24 m, it’s the highest mountain in Japan9.

A couple of spots in the village are worth knowing by name:

  • Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan (Hannoki Bayashi Museum): set in the oldest thatched private house in Oshino Village1, and home to Sokonashi Pond, the only pond with set hours3.
  • Nakaike: a popular photo spot, and an artificial pond next to a souvenir shop1.

Fees and hours

Is there an entrance fee at Oshino Hakkai?

Mostly no: most areas are free to enter2, says Japan City Tour. The Hannoki Bayashi Museum, which includes Sokonashi Pond, charges ¥300 (about US$2) (checked October 2026) for adults and ¥1501 (under US$1) for children.

Museum entry: ¥300 adults1

The ponds themselves have no opening hours3, because they’re a natural site rather than a gated attraction. Google Maps lists them the same way, open Mon–Sun 00:00–24:0011. The museum opens 9:00–17:001.

Bus, train or car

How do you get to the ponds from Kawaguchiko?

Take the Fujikko-go sightseeing bus from Kawaguchiko Station. It runs 11 times a day and drops you about 3 minutes4 on foot from the ponds.

Fujikko-go: 11 departures a day4

The Fujikko-go needs no reservation4, since it’s a regular scheduled bus. Single rides are priced by zone, from ¥1004 (under US$1) for adults, and the sightseeing bus passes in the fees table cover it too.

Coming by train instead, the nearest station is Fujisan (Mt. Fuji) Station on the Fuji Kyuko Line7. Fujikyu’s local bus runs from Mt. Fuji Station via the ponds to Uchino12; get off at the Iriguchi stop. For the other routes, see the sightseeing buses linking the lakes.

Before you set off

Crowds, timing and access

Go early if you can. The ponds can be crowded with tour groups5, Wikivoyage warns, though Japan’s national tourism site finds that the area stays peaceful7 even when it’s busy.

An early start helps the view too: Mount Fuji is best seen in the morning13, before haze and cloud build up, according to Japan’s national tourism site. It’s also easier to see in the colder seasons14 than in summer, says JTB Travel, but the Kawaguchiko area gets extremely cold in winter6.

On access, the Yamanashi tourism site’s universal design notes for the ponds list:

  • wheelchair-accessible toilets15
  • ostomate-friendly toilets15

Day tours that stop at the springs

Several day tours from Tokyo name Oshino Hakkai in their own titles, usually alongside Arakurayama Sengen Park or Kawaguchiko Oishi Park. They suit you if you’d rather not juggle bus connections.

Nearby sights and lunch

The Fujikko-go also serves Fujiyoshida and Yamanakako4, so you can pair the springs with Lake Yamanakako on the same bus.

Aquarium: 1 min by bus + 5 min walk16

For lunch, look out for hoto, a Yamanashi noodle soup made with thick, flat wheat-flour noodles17. It’s served in restaurants, local eateries and ryokan17 across the prefecture: see where to try hoto near the lake.
