What a bed costs

Accommodation tax: ¥200 per person a night8

  • Kage LowDorm bed, per person ¥3,690–¥3,870

  • Dot Hostel & BarTwin room, room only, per room (Travelist) from ¥15,800

Starting prices from the hostels' own sites and booking sites; per person unless marked per room. Sorted by price, not a ranking.

A few things to know when you read those prices:

  • Kage Low’s Japanese rooms are priced per room1, so split between friends they come out close to a dorm bed.
  • Michael’s rates include 10% tax3.
  • Dot Hostel & Bar’s booking sites disagree on the twin room: tour.ne.jp shows it from ¥9,540 for 2 guests4 (about US$60), because its prices are totals for one room and two guests, tax included7.
  • Add the accommodation tax: a flat ¥200 per person per night8 (about US$1), whatever the bed costs. The table shows when it starts at each hostel.

Who it suits

Is a hostel right for your trip?

A hostel here suits solo travellers, couples and small groups who want a cheaper bed and a kitchen. It suits young children less, especially at Kage Low.

Who it suits

  • Solo travellers: Dot Hostel & Bar’s dorm beds have curtains for privacy5.
  • Couples: Kage Low says its queen-size room lets couples stay in comfort1.
  • Small groups: Kage Low’s Japanese Room ‘Medium’ sleeps up to 31, and TOCORO’s sofa-bed rooms sleep up to 36.
  • Families: Dot Hostel & Bar’s family room is 30 m² with a large unit bath so parents can bathe with their children5. Hostel Fujisan YOU has an apartment for families and groups of 3 to 614.
  • Self-caterers: Kage Low has a shared kitchen stocked with cooking equipment and seasonings1, and Dot Hostel & Bar has a fridge, toaster oven, microwave and kettle5.

Who it doesn’t

  • Families with small children at Kage Low: the building is designed for adult backpackers and not child-friendly11.
  • YHA members at Michael’s: it’s an independent hostel that doesn’t honour YHA cards15.
  • Light packers in Dot Hostel & Bar’s dorm: toothbrushes, razors, hairbrushes and body towels cost extra5.
