Kawaguchiko attractions: sights, views, fees and access

Chureito Pagoda with snow-capped Mt Fuji and Fujiyoshida town behind, cherry trees in bloom

Lake Kawaguchi is one of the Fuji Five Lakes4, and it’s the easiest of the five to reach and the most touristic1. So you get plenty to do, and plenty of company doing it.

The shortlist

Kawaguchiko attractions worth your time

Each pick below says what it is, who it suits, how to get there and what it costs, as far as the facts go.

Fuji-Q Highland entry is free18

Mt Fuji Panoramic Ropeway up Mt Tenjo

The Mt Fuji Panoramic Ropeway lifts you from the lake shore to Mt Tenjo, at about 1,075 m2. From the summit deck you look straight at Lake Kawaguchi and Mt Fuji, and there’s a scenic swing that faces Mt Fuji2.

  • Suits: first-timers who want the lake-and-Fuji view without a hike.
  • Getting there: the Red Line sightseeing bus takes about 15 minutes2 from Kawaguchiko Station to the Yuransen stop.
  • Hours: 8:30–17:00, last descent 17:202; hours can change by season.
  • Cost: an adult return is ¥1,0005 (about US$6) until 1 November 2026, then ¥1,2007 (about US$8) (checked October 2026). A child return from that date is ¥6008 (about US$4).

If you drive, the operator asks you to park at the free prefectural car park on the lakeshore7.

10 hours

Some Tokyo day trips bundle the ride as a Tenjozan ropeway ticket, such as this Mount Fuji day trip with a Tenjozan Park ropeway ticket.

Oishi Park and the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center

Oishi Park is the north-shore stop for a slow lakeside walk, and the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center inside it is where you can buy local specialities and have light meals9.

  • Suits: an easy stroll by the water, with lunch and souvenirs under one roof.
  • Getting there: the Red Line sightseeing bus runs along the shore to the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center on the north side10; it’s the last stop11.
  • Hours: 9:00–18:00, or 9:00–17:30 from November to March12.
  • Access: wheelchair-accessible toilets12.

For the seasons and the walk itself, read the guide to Lake Kawaguchi’s Mt Fuji park.

Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge

The Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge is a 500 m crossing over the eastern side of the lake13. Nothing blocks the view from the bridge13, so it’s a good spot for Mt Fuji across the water.

It suits photographers and anyone already walking the eastern shore. Pair it with the maple corridor and the Museum of Art below.

Momiji Corridor and the autumn leaves festival

The Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival runs 7 to 29 November, with about 400 to 500 maples14 on the lake shore. The maple corridor is lit up from sunset to 21:0014.

The town’s tourism site says the corridor suits photographers and leisurely lakeside walkers15, and is easy to combine with the Kawaguchiko Museum of Art and the Ohashi Bridge area.

Kawaguchiko Museum of Art

The Kawaguchiko Museum of Art shows Mt Fuji-themed paintings, prints and photographs16 in a lakeside building. It’s a good rainy-afternoon plan B.

  • Getting there: the Red Line bus takes about 25 minutes16 to the Kawaguchiko Museum of Art stop, right by the door.
  • Hours: 9:30–17:00, last entry 16:3016.
  • Cost: adults pay ¥500 (about US$3) for the collection or ¥800 (about US$5) for special exhibitions; elementary school children and younger go free17.
  • Access: disability certificate holders get in free, plus one companion17.

Fuji-Q Highland: Eejanaika, Takabisha, the haunted hospital and Thomas Land

Fuji-Q Highland is free to enter, but rides need tickets or a pass18. An adult One Day Pass is ¥6,000–7,900 (about US$38–50) (checked October 2026) depending on the date, and ¥4,400–5,10018 (about US$28–32) for elementary school children.

  • Getting there: Fuji-Q Highland Station on the Fujikyu Line; highway buses stop at a terminal next to the park19.
  • Afternoon Pass: unlimited rides from 1 pm, at ¥4,100–6,00018 (about US$26–38) for adults.
  • Hours: on 19 October 2026 the park listed 9:00–19:0020 for that day, so check the date you want.

The rides people come for:

  • Eejanaika: Fuji-Q calls it a 4th Dimension Hypercoaster21 with the world’s highest total number of revolutions. It hits 126 km/h21.
  • Takabisha: a 121-degree22 maximum drop, which the park says is a certified world record.
  • Senritsu Meikyu: a haunted hospital walk-through set in a closed general hospital, taking about 50 minutes23.
  • Thomas Land: a Thomas the Tank Engine area with 12 attractions, designed for families with small children24.

Plan your rides with the Fuji-Q Highland tickets and rides page.

Fugaku Wind Cave and Narusawa Ice Cave

The lava caves are a cool escape on a hot day. Narusawa Ice Cave is a two-tunnel lava cave with icicles and ice pillars25, and Fugaku Wind Cave averages 3 °C26 inside, even in summer.

  • Suits: families pick the Wind Cave, which is gently sloping and easy to tour, in about 15 minutes26. The Ice Cave suits nimbler visitors.
  • Getting there: about 30 minutes3 by bus from Kawaguchiko Station to the Wind Cave or Ice Cave stop.
  • Hours: may change with the weather and conditions inside the caves27.

Herb Garden Tabinikki and the Fujisan Deck

Herb Garden Tabinikki grows about 200 kinds of herbs and flowers at the foot of Mt Fuji, and entry is free, all year28. The Fujisan Deck viewpoint costs ¥1,000 (about US$6) for adults and ¥50028 (about US$3) for children.

  • Hours: 9:00–18:00, last entry 17:3028.
  • Getting there: the Green or Red Line takes about 10 minutes to Yakuba Iriguchi, then it’s a 10-minute walk29.
  • Time: allow about an hour29 for the garden and deck. Parking is free28.

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja and the Yoshida Trail

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja in Fujiyoshida is a component of the Mt Fuji World Heritage site30, and the Yoshida Ascending Route up Mt Fuji starts at the shrine31. It’s open 8:30–17:0030.

  • Getting there: take the bus from Fujikyu Fujisan Station to Sengen Jinja-mae, then walk about 1 minute30. By car it’s about 5 minutes30 from Kawaguchiko IC.
  • Further up: the route’s 2nd station stands at 1,720 m31, linked by legend to ascetic practice.

The Chureito Pagoda in this page’s top photo is in Fujiyoshida too, at Arakurayama Sengen Park.

Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station

Buses from Kawaguchiko Station reach the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station in about 50 minutes1. A single adult fare is ¥2,000 (about US$13), or ¥3,40032 (about US$21) return, valid for two days33.

Small museums and craft workshops for a rainy day

The town’s tourism site pitches Fujikawaguchiko as a place for nature and culture even on rainy days34. These indoor stops are why.

Before you set off

Tips for visiting

Busiest in cherry blossom season46

  • Pick your season: the lake draws its biggest crowds in spring, during cherry blossom season46, so start early.
  • Coming by train: change at Otsuki to the Fuji Kyuko Line47; the whole trip from Tokyo takes 2 hours 5 minutes48.
  • Warm up with hoto: it’s a Yamanashi noodle soup with thick, flat wheat-flour noodles, served in restaurants, local eateries and ryokan49. Here’s where to find Yamanashi’s thick hoto noodles.
  • Soak afterwards: the lakes around here are known for hot springs48 as much as views.
  • Rowers on the water: the Kawaguchiko Rowing Course is a 1,000 m, six-lane course used mainly by university and high-school rowing clubs50.
  • String it together: a Kawaguchiko itinerary puts these stops in order, or compare Fuji lakes day tour options if you’d rather not juggle buses.

Where can you see Mount Fuji best around the lake?

Go up the ropeway, whose summit deck looks straight at Lake Kawaguchi and Mt Fuji2, or walk the Ohashi Bridge, where nothing blocks the view13. Both sit on the east side, so you can do them in a single morning.

Questions people ask

Can you use a JR Pass to reach Fuji-Q Highland?

No. You change to the Fujikyu Line (Fuji Kyuko Line), and the JR Rail Pass isn't accepted on it.

Is the Kawaguchiko Herb Festival still held?

No, it ended as an event after the 2025 fiscal year. Lavender can still be seen at Oishi Park and Yagizaki Park.

How cold is Kawaguchiko in winter?

January averages a daily high of 5.5 °C and a low of −5.7 °C, so dress for ice.
