What counts as private

Private bath types at Kawaguchiko: in the room or by the slot

A private onsen here means either a bath that comes with your room or a private bath you have to yourselves for a fixed slot. Check which one your plan includes before you pay.

  • A bath in your room. At FuFu Kawaguchiko, every room has its own open-air hot-spring bath laid with Mt. Fuji lava stone4. You soak whenever you like.
  • A private bath by the slot (kashikiri). You take a bath for your group for a set time, such as 50 minutes1 at Shuhokaku Kogetsu, and pay per group.

Does Fuji Lake Hotel have a private onsen?

Yes. Fuji Lake Hotel, on the shore of Lake Kawaguchiko in Funatsu10, has a paid private hot-spring bath with a Mt. Fuji view9. Some of its rooms have their own hot-spring bathtubs9 too.

You can’t book the private bath before your trip: it must be reserved on the day, at check-in9. Arrive early if you want a good slot.

Soak on your own schedule

Rooms with their own open-air bath

If you want to soak on your own schedule, book a room type with its own bath. At FuFu Kawaguchiko and Fuji Onsenji Yumedono, every room has one.

Per adult, two sharing

What a private-bath stay costs

Expect ¥17,400 (about US$110) to ¥191,35023 (about US$1,209) per adult a night with two sharing, depending on the stay and the room. The cheapest plans aren’t always rooms with their own bath.

  • Kasuitei OoyaJTB listing ¥17,400–¥44,650
  • Ooike HotelRoom-only to kaiseki plan, own booking engine ¥18,000–¥49,950
  • RakuyuBreakfast and lounge plan, own booking engine ¥22,000–¥38,500
  • Shuhokaku KogetsuJTB listing ¥28,600–¥42,300
  • KonansouStandard plan, dinner and breakfast, own booking engine ¥29,700–¥59,400
  • UbuyaJTB listing ¥38,500–¥69,300
  • Fuji Onsenji YumedonoBreakfast plan, room with open-air bath, own booking engine from ¥45,100
  • FuFu KawaguchikoJTB listing, every room with its own bath ¥58,450–¥191,350

Per adult per night with two sharing a room, tax included. Konansou, Ooike Hotel, Rakuyu and Yumedono from their own booking engines; the others from JTB. The cheapest plans may be rooms without their own bath.

A few things to know before you compare:

  • JTB’s per-night prices are room totals for 2 adults24, so halve them for a per-person figure.
  • The cheapest Ooike Hotel rate is a very small no-view room on a room-only plan25, not a room with a bath.
  • At FuFu Kawaguchiko, children aged 12 and under pay a child rate of ¥1,65026 (about US$10) a night.

Couples, families, winter trips

Who a private onsen stay suits, and who it doesn’t

A private onsen stay suits couples and families who’d rather not share a bath, and anyone visiting in the cold months. It suits tight budgets and late arrivals less well.

It works well for:

  • Couples and celebrations. Ubuya says its rooms are particularly suited to celebrations17, and Fuji Onsenji Yumedono calls itself a refined hideaway for adults12.
  • Families who want to bathe together. Shuhokaku Kogetsu says its private baths suit families, couples and solo guests1.
  • Winter visitors. The area gets extremely cold in winter28, and a bath nobody else is waiting for is a fair reward after a day out.

Think twice if:

  • You’re on a budget. Even the slot-only stays charge extra for the bath, and in-room baths push the rate up. Compare ryokan prices and who they suit for plans without one.
  • You want real hot-spring water. Ask, because some private and in-room baths here don’t use it.
  • You’d rather not stay in a ryokan. The glamping village near Lake Kawaguchiko page covers a different way to stay.

Hot springs by the lake

Is there an onsen in Kawaguchiko?

Yes. The Fuji Five Lakes are known for hot springs, outdoor recreation and views31, and several Kawaguchiko stays have shared hot-spring baths as well as private ones.

  • Akaishi Ryokan’s Fuyo no Yu hot-spring bath is free for overnight guests32, according to KNT.
  • Rakuyu has a large view bath, a sauna and the private Tenku bath8.
  • FuFu Kawaguchiko’s in-room baths are fed by the hotel’s own hot spring source3, JTB says.

Lake Kawaguchi sits at about 800 metres, which brings cool summers and frequently icy winters33. January nights average −5.7 °C34, so see how cold Kawaguchiko gets in winter before you plan an outdoor soak.
