Inside the village
Thatched houses and craft workshops
Nenba is a place to wander between thatched farmhouses and try a traditional craft. Fujikawaguchiko town has restored about 202 of the houses, and Fujikyu Bus describes the area as lined with traditional gassho-zukuri style buildings9.
About 20 restored thatched houses2
The village sits on the shore of Lake Saiko1, one of three of the Fuji Five Lakes10 inside Fujikawaguchiko. Between workshops, you can walk through its museums and galleries2.
Inside a traditional thatched-roof house, you can try:
Tsuchiasobi Fuji Roman-gama pottery studio
Nenba’s pottery studio says people of all ages can try ceramics there11. Here’s what to expect:
- Painted pieces can be taken home the same day, once the paint dries11.
- The handbuilding workshop takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour11.
- Handbuilt pieces and handprint keepsakes are fired and then delivered in about one month11.
- The studio also makes clay keepsakes of a baby’s or pet’s handprint or footprint11.
Nenba’s Tsurushi-kazari (hanging ornament) activity is currently suspended12. If the village’s sessions don’t fit your day, Kawaguchiko Craft Park is another option for craft workshops, and it says anyone can easily enjoy them13.
Booking and cancelling a workshop
Nenba asks you to book experiences by phoning each shop14. The sources differ here, though: japan-guide says no advance booking is needed14.
| When you cancel | Charge |
