Each place is here because a checked source backs it: its own site, its booking page or its map listing gives its kind, price or who it suits. Not ranked: most searched first. A dash means our sources don't say. Each value comes from the sources listed at the end of this page.

The table follows the order of our main stays list, so it isn’t a ranking. Each price is the inn’s own per-adult rate. Below you’ll find what a ryokan stay includes here, who each inn is aimed at and the booking rules that differ.

Tatami, futons and kaiseki

What a ryokan includes at Lake Kawaguchi

Most ryokan have an onsen4

A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn4. Japan’s tourism board lists what you can usually expect:

  • tatami floors and futon bedding4
  • yukata robes4
  • private baths, sometimes outdoor4
  • an in-house kaiseki multi-course dinner and a traditional Japanese breakfast4
  • an onsen (hot spring)4, which most ryokan have

Kawaguchiko Onsen spreads along the shore of Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes5. JTB calls its open-air baths with views of Mt Fuji and the lakeshore5 the hot-spring area’s biggest draw.

Where these inns break the pattern

  • Dinner: Ooike Hotel sells a Japanese kaiseki dinner-and-breakfast plan6, but Yamagishi Ryokan’s most popular plan1 swaps kaiseki for all-you-can-eat beef shabu-shabu.
  • Shared baths: at Yamagishi Ryokan, the large indoor bath and the open-air bath are separate for men and women7, so couples bathe apart.
  • Bathrooms: Fuji Heights Ryokan gives you a private tatami room, but guests share three bathrooms8.
  • Where you eat: Bessho Sasa serves dinner in your room9, while Fuji Onsenji Yumedono uses private dining rooms10 for both meals.

On the shore

Are there ryokans right on Lake Kawaguchi?

Yes. Yamagishi Ryokan sits on the shore of Lake Kawaguchi11, and Kasuitei Ooya has looked out on Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi for about a century12.

Kasuitei Ooya: 10 min walk from the station14

Where each inn is:

  • Yamagishi Ryokan: on the lakeshore. From its lake-view open-air bath you see Lake Kawaguchi and the Kachikachi-yama ropeway right in front of you13.
  • Kasuitei Ooya: at 4025 Funatsu, a 10-minute walk14 from Kawaguchiko Station, handy if you arrive by train or bus.
  • Ooike Hotel: also in Funatsu15.
  • Fuji Onsenji Yumedono: in Funatsu16 too.
  • Fuji Heights Ryokan: in Kodachi, Fujikawaguchiko.
  • Bessho Sasa: the odd one out, inside Hotel Kanezan-en, which JTB places in the Fujiyoshida area17. Guests can use Hotel Kanezan-en’s large view baths18.

Couples, families, groups

Who a ryokan suits, and who it doesn’t

These inns suit couples, families with small children and groups, but each one goes after a different crowd. Read the inn’s own description before you book.

Who it suits

  • Couples: Fuji Onsenji Yumedono calls itself a refined hideaway for adults20, and Bessho Sasa sells an anniversary plan for two21.
  • Families with small children: Ooike Hotel bills itself as a Fuji inn for parents and children to enjoy together15, with a kids’ room of picture books, toys and a ball pool22. At Kasuitei Ooya, elementary-school children pay 70% of the adult rate, and infants sharing a bed pay a ¥2,75023 (about US$17) facility fee.
  • Groups and wheelchair users: Yamagishi Ryokan has function rooms of various sizes for meetings, and you can borrow a wheelchair, with a slope from the entrance7. Contact the inn about its universal rooms24.
  • Tighter budgets: Yamagishi Ryokan’s breakfast-only plan starts at ¥13,0001 (about US$82) per adult. If that’s still too much, compare Kawaguchiko hostel prices and options.

Who it doesn’t suit

What it means for you:

  • Running late? Kasuitei Ooya takes check-ins until 22:00 on plans without dinner23, and Yumedono’s breakfast-only plan allows late check-in until midnight3.
  • Coming by train or bus? For Yamagishi Ryokan’s free shuttle, phone the inn when you reach Kawaguchiko Station26. Yumedono’s shuttle runs at set times; ask when booking27.
  • Want the private bath? Kasuitei Ooya’s private view bath, Ukifune, must be booked in advance28.

Per adult, room shared

Ryokan prices per night, plan by plan

Most of these inns charge more than Japan’s ryokan average of around ¥15,0004 (about US$95) a night. The ladder shows each inn’s lowest and highest starting rates per adult.

Japan average: around ¥15,000 a night4

  • Yamagishi RyokanRoom only to lake-side room with dinner and breakfast ¥11,000–¥19,000
  • Kasuitei OoyaJTB listing, tax included ¥17,400–¥44,650
  • Ooike HotelRoom only to new Fuji-side room with kaiseki dinner ¥18,000–¥49,950
  • Fuji Onsenji YumedonoBreakfast only to dinner and breakfast, open-air bath room ¥45,100–¥58,300
  • Bessho SasaWeekday rate, tax and service included from ¥53,900

Starting rates per adult with the room shared, tax included. All come from each inn's own booking page except Kasuitei Ooya's, which come from JTB. Fuji Heights Ryokan has no checked price.

Before you book:

  • Book direct for deals: Fuji Onsenji Yumedono’s own site sells a selected-dates dinner plan with 15% off and a full bottle of wine, from ¥49,5553 (about US$313) per person.
  • Check what an agent’s price covers: JTB lists Yumedono at ¥90,200–435,60032 (about US$570–2,753) per night, against ¥58,3003 (about US$368) (checked October 2026) per person on the inn’s own booking engine. JTB’s listed prices are per adult, two sharing, for one night, tax included17.
  • Don’t trust one listing: for one ryokan, a listing fed by Booking gives hot-spring hours of 15:00–23:00 and 6:00–9:00, shorter than KNT’s 6:00–23:0033. Confirm bath hours with the inn.
