Two ways to plan it

Side by side: day trip or overnight

A day trip is simpler to plan. A night by the lake gives you the morning, which JNTO calls the best time to see Mount Fuji1, before haze and cloud build up.

Bus from Shinjuku: about 1 hr 45 min1

Day trip from Tokyo

Out and back the same day, by bus, train or tour

  • Express bus from Shinjuku: about 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Most visitors to Fujikawaguchiko come this way
  • Mount Fuji is often wrapped in cloud by day

Overnight by the lake

Sleep near Lake Kawaguchi, see the sights by day

  • Be up for the early morning, when the mountain is most often clear
  • JNTO's full Fuji Five Lakes plan runs 3 days
  • Time for the quieter lakes, harder to reach by public transport

Lake Kawaguchi is the easiest of the five lakes to reach, and Kawaguchiko is the most popular base for the Fuji Five Lakes region3. So both plans start in the same place: Kawaguchiko Station.

For the full plans, read the day trip details or the plan with a night by the lake.

Ready-made routes from the tourism boards

The official tourism sites publish model courses you can copy, from a day on the local buses to 3 days1 round the lakes.

The Yamanashi course tells you to buy the sightseeing bus free coupon at the bus counter4 when you arrive at Kawaguchiko Station. The Red Line bus then takes about 20 minutes to the Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum stop, and about 10 minutes4 more to the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center.

The red line runs every 15 minutes5 along the eastern and northern shores. The Fujikyu area bus pass covers the Kawaguchiko Sightseeing Bus (Red Line)6, so a pass suits a day with several stops.

Fares and small spends

Costs side by side

Getting to the lake from Tokyo is the main fare on either plan; staying over adds a room on top.

The Oishi Park Line boat shuttles between Funatsu pier and Oishi Park9. The last regular-season boat leaves Funatsu at 16:1510, so a day-tripper should plan the boat before the afternoon.

For lunch, hoto is Yamanashi’s noodle soup made with thick, flat wheat-flour noodles11. You’ll find it in restaurants, local eateries and ryokan11 across the prefecture; see the page on hoto noodles in Kawaguchiko.

Pick your plan

Which plan suits whom?

The day trip suits a Tokyo base and a spare day; the overnight suits anyone chasing morning views of Mount Fuji or the quieter lakes beyond Kawaguchiko.

Fuji clearest in the early morning2

Choose the day trip if

  • You have a spare day and a Tokyo base, and you’re happy to travel light.
  • You want the famous photo stops on the same outing. Chureito Pagoda is about 25 minutes on foot from Shimoyoshida Station12 on the Fujikyu Line.
  • You’d rather someone else did the driving. Guided tours from Tokyo pair Arakurayama Sengen Park, one of Japan’s best-known Mount Fuji viewpoints12, with Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai.

Choose the overnight if

  • You want the morning. JNTO’s advice is to wake early and head to the north side of Lake Kawaguchi1 for the views.
  • You want to see more than Lake Kawaguchi. The other lakes are less developed and harder to reach by public transport13, which takes time.
  • You want an early start on the water: coffee on a kayak with Mount Fuji sets off from the lake shore at dawn.
  • You’d like the lake after the crowds leave, since most visitors to Fujikawaguchiko come on day trips14.
